Originally instituted in 1945 for participation in the liberation of the Philippines between 17 October 1944 and 2 September 1945, it was first offered to Australians in August 1994 as part of commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Leyte Gulf.  About 3,500 Australians are entitled to this medal.
